WELCOME TO WITSAND

Coastal Comfort on the Whale Coast

Witsand Whale Cliff Accommodation is a genuine, year-round destination. There is something special happening at any time of year.

During our summer months (November to April), the days are long, sunny and warm and the blue skies stretch as far as the eye can see. It is a wonderful time to swim at low tides, stroll on the beach – and enjoy the long, lazy summer evenings.
The winter season brings the first whales that usually begin to arrive in the bay in front of Witsand Whale Cliff Accommodation in late May or June.

The whale watching season can stretch all the way to November, but the best months are considered to be August. It is over this period that some of the best whale viewing happens from the comfort of your home. The winter days are shorter and perhaps a little cooler, but this certainly doesn’t detract from the activities and experience on offer – and nothing a jacket can’t fix!

Things to Do & See

Land-Based Whale Watching

Southern Right Whales up close

Witsand, also known as the “whale nursery” of South Africa due to the amount of Southern right whales migrating to San Sebastian Bay yearly one of the world’s best land-based whale-watching areas in South Africa. During the winter months (June to November), Southern Right whales come so close to the shoreline that visitors can relax on the deck of Witsand Whale Cliff accommodation and watch in awe as these beautiful creatures calve, blow, breach and belly-flop.

Increasing numbers of whales visit Witsand each year.

The Southern Right whale spends the summer months in the far Southern Ocean feeding close to Antarctica and migrates north in winter for warm-water breeding. The fidelity of the females to safe feeding and calving habitats brings these mammals in increasing numbers to Witsand. The mother passes these instincts onto her calves which results in visitors being able to view this transient population of literally hundreds of whales that visit Witsand shores annually.
